The first international Independents Day is happening very soon – and it is all kicking off in New Zealand!

Independents Day 08 is an international three day celebration of independent music, which will run from Friday July 4 to Sunday July 6 this year. Independent Music New Zealand, which represents over 70 of the country’s independent record labels, is teaming up with independent record label associations from around the world - the UK, Australia, USA, Spain and other countries - to let the world know about the international independent music scene. Artists under the IMNZ umbrella include Fat Freddy’s Drop, Flight of the Conchords, Hollie Smith, Opshop, Kora and Chris Knox and the Nothing, and elsewhere the independent music sector was the first home to artists including The Beatles, Elvis and Coldplay and still home to the likes of Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and Bjork.

The auction will provide a once-in-a-lifetime chance to grab a piece of musical history, with musical rarities and personal artist collectibles all going under the hammer. Lots include signed Radiohead artwork, sets of signed Roots Manuva albums, Chris Slade drum signed sticks (AC/DC), Kim and Kelly Deal-signed Breeders EP and posters and rare Arcade Fire singles. Proceeds go to charities in each participating country such as the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund in the UK and Musicares in the US.

Independents Day 08 - THE LIMITED EDITION ALBUM

The very very very limited edition Independents Day 08 album comes out on Friday July 4. It’s only on sale for three days so put that date in your diary! After Sunday July 6 the album will be remover forever, making it a bit of a collector’s item.

The album includes tracks from local independent favourites plus new talent, and some exclusive UK tracks. Artists from here include An Emerald City, Little Bushman, Tiki, the Naked and Famous, Tiger Tones, The Brunettes, Shapeshifter and Flowz and more, and from there we have tunes from the Prodigy, the Charlatans, Devendra Banhart and the Infadels. In a nice tribute to the indies, the UK album consists of UK indie artists covering their favourite independent songs; and a TV show is being produced which follows the progress of the album.

Independents Day 08 – THE TOP TEN NZ INDIE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME (or since 2000 anyway!)

Would you like to find out which are the very best New Zealand independent albums released since 2000? All will be revealed on Friday July 4 when the IMNZ All Time (well since IMNZ started in 2000 anyway) Top Ten is announced! Voting is open to the public and we’re also rounding up the Top tens of a variety of New Zealand music experts which we’ll feature on our website.

IMNZ was set up in 2001 to provide a voice for New Zealand-owned independent record labels and distributors. IMNZ promotes independent labels and their artists, and works for improvements to the industry that will benefit independent labels.  We started with about 15 members; we currently have around 75 member labels and distributors whose artists include such diverse acts as Hollie Smith, Kora, Tiger Tones, the Naked and Famous, Scribe, Shapeshifter, Fat Freddy’s Drop, SJD, Pitch Black, Don McGlashan, Die! Die! Die!, Cornerstone Roots, Unity Pacific, Opshop, Goldenhorse, Young Sid, So So Modern and many more.
