Released on July 4th to mark the first annual Independents Day celebration, ‘Independents Day – ID08’ is a unique compilation featuring some of the finest international artists recording for British independent labels today, covering the independently released tracks that influenced their careers.
A Double CD for the price of a single, CD1 sees the likes of Tom Smith from Editors, Jack Peñate, The Prodigy and José González covering artists as varied as Joy Division, Oasis and Metallica, offering unique takes on some much loved classics, and includes several previously unreleased exclusive tracks. Whilst CD2 gives us a glimpse of tomorrow stars as the first disc’s acts take the A&R reins and select some of their favourite bands.
Only available in shops for three days (and online for a month), ‘Independents Day – ID08’ is guaranteed to be a collectors item for years to come, and with the proceeds from the album benefitting C.A.L.M., the Musician’s Benevolent Fund and supporting independent music initiatives, is good for both your ears and the independent music community at large.
Pre-orders are now available at online retailers such as Amazon and Play, and will soon open at the Independents Day website (www.independentsday08.com).
In the UK the CD is being accompanied by a series of documentaries on Channel 4 (made by Tough Cookie, part of Whizz Kid Entertainment) special features on local and national radio and an already running historic auction (phase 1 ends June 19th) with heavy bidding already on Arctic Monkeys test pressings and Gary Numan discs.
Organised in the UK by the Association of Independent Music (AIM), Independents Day is a long overdue celebration of one of the most vital and innovative sectors of the music industry with events being held worldwide. The gobal activities have been organised under the umbrella of WIN, the Worldwide Independent Network, of which Alison Wenham is the founding President.

Channel 4 commission Independents Day series
Channel 4 has commissioned Tough Cookie, part of Whizz Kid Entertainment, to produce a four-part music entertainment series as part of Independents Day, a new initiative from Association of Independent Music (AIM) to celebrate 50 years of independently released music.
The series commissioned by Neil McCallum, Commissioning Editor, T4, Youth and Music at Channel 4, will include in-depth interviews and performances by big-name artists who made their names through the independent scene covering their favourite songs for a double CD. The series will be filmed at a specially organised Independents Day 08 gig at London’s Cargo and broadcast in early July. Artists already confirmed include Futureheads, Maximo Park, The Charlatans and Feeder.
Central to the initiative is the release of a double CD. CD1 features well known artists covering their favourite independently released songs. CD2 includes a selection of new and upcoming acts, as chosen by the acts featured on CD1. The event will raise awareness of the importance of independently released music across the globe, and will raise money for the independent music community and their chosen charities.
Malcolm Gerrie, Chief Executive, Whizz Kid Entertainment, says: “We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting initiative and important debut fixture in the music industry calendar. Independent record labels are the lifeblood of music. Without it, and the likes of Island Records taking risks to find talent, there is a good chance that the world would never have heard artists such as Bob Marley or U2. These programmes will showcase and celebrate the legacy and also capture the talent and energy which is independent music.”
In addition MTV 2 will also be airing seven hours of music videos from 10 independent labels, which will be followed by a 120 minute Independents Day special feature. XFM are programming label documentaries, which will air over the weekend of 4th July and will include interviews with key independent music industry representatives and artists. An auction of music memorabilia will also run on eBay.
From the conception of Island Records in 1958 independent labels have long played a vital role in UK music. The likes of Chrysalis, Rough Trade, Factory, Beggars, Mute, and more recently XL Recordings, Domino, Warp, Wichita, Dance To The Radio and many others have often led the way in terms of both new talent and sales. Recent independent successes have included four Mercury Music Prize wins in a row (2003 - 2006), a quarter of all available prizes at the 2008 Brit Awards and the independent sector regularly accounts for 30% of all UK artist album awards (silver, gold, platinum/multi-platinum) and 27.5% of world music sales.
The initiative will raise money for a number of beneficiaries. In the UK, Independents Day 08 is raising money for charities C.A.L.M The Campaign Against Living Miserably, a charity helping with the issue of suicide amongst young men and The Musicians Benevolent Fund (MBF) which provides help and support to musicians and their dependants and those in related occupations when illness, accident or old age brings stress or financial burdens.
